Care that starts with understanding

Care that starts with understanding

Care that starts with understanding

Living with persistent pain can feel isolating. Many people tell me they have seen numerous healthcare professionals before arriving at Wye Sanctuary, yet still don’t fully understand why they hurt or what they can do about it. My role is not simply to diagnose and treat pain, but to help you make sense of your experience, understand your options and develop a personalised plan that supports your long-term wellbeing.

Consultant-led throughout

Consultant-led throughout

Every consultation is carried out by me, Consultant in Pain Medicine Dr Charlotte Small. You will always know who is responsible for your care, ensuring continuity, consistency and the opportunity to build a trusted therapeutic relationship over time.

Time to listen

Time to listen

Pain cannot be understood in a ten-minute appointment. We believe that listening carefully is one of the most important parts of good pain medicine. By taking the time to understand your symptoms, your medical history and how pain affects your life, we can develop a plan that is truly centred around you.

Evidence-based care

Evidence-based care

Every recommendation is grounded in current medical evidence and national guidance. Treatment may include education, medication, interventional procedures, rehabilitation or sometimes helping you understand why your pain persists. Not every patient needs an injection, and not every problem has a single solution. Together, we’ll decide what is most appropriate for you.

Trauma-responsive practice

Trauma-responsive practice

Feeling safe is fundamental to good healthcare. My work supporting survivors of childhood sexual abuse has strengthened my commitment to trauma-responsive care. Every consultation is delivered with sensitivity, respect and an understanding that previous life experiences can shape both pain and the experience of healthcare.

Joined-up care

Joined-up care

Persistent pain rarely exists in isolation. Where appropriate, we work alongside your GP, physiotherapists, psychologists, surgeons and other healthcare professionals to ensure your care is coordinated and consistent.

A relationship, not just an appointment

A relationship, not just an appointment

Living with chronic pain is often a journey rather than a single event. Whether we meet once for specialist advice or work together over a longer period, our aim is to provide thoughtful, compassionate care that gives you the knowledge and confidence to move forward.
